BFR is useful in the rehabilitation setting as a bridge to improve muscle strength when a person may not be able to lift heavier weights and resistance. This applies following an acute injury or surgery while a patient has lifting precautions.
By occluding a calculated amount of blood flow to a muscle during exercise (using SmartCuff® technology), the muscle is placed under greater metabolic stress. This creates a stimulus to promote muscle protein synthesis (building stronger muscles), even while using lighter resistance.
